The Rolex Explorer 1016’s combination of simplicity, durability, and versatility has made it a highly sought-after vintage timepiece, appreciated by collectors for its rich history and timeless design. #TBT on Fratello Watches looks at a near perfect example of an L-series Rolex Explorer 1016: one of the brand's most beautiful watches.Welcome to Explorer1016.com, a website dedicated to the iconic Rolex Explorer model 1016. Over the past decades, the Explorer – and its longest running model the 1016 – has risen with the popularity of vintage watches to become a sought-after cornerstone of collections everywhere.
The story of the Explorer began with two earlier bubblebacks, the references 6098 and 6150 (housing the calibre A296), which were utilized by adventurers and mountaineers at the beginning of the 1950’s.
Case: The 1016 case is a traditional time only watch case with long, slender lugs and no crown guards. Here are some of the notable dimensions: Diameter: 36 mm across without the crown; Crown: 6 mm diameter (part number 24-600-0)As the 1016s were discontinued different service dials were made because, presumably, the original dial variations were not longer available. There appear to be three “standard” dials that were also used as service dials and one “service only” dial variant.
Known colloquially as the frog foot because of the splayed points of the coronet, the Mark 1 dial marks Rolex’s move away from gilt dials toward the more utilitarian matte dial.
Matte Dials. While there has never been an official statement of why Rolex moved from gilt to matte dials in the latter half of the 1960’s, the latter seems to exude the ‘tool watch’ vibe that Rolex aspired to inspire — while (likely) keeping production costs low.Mark 5. This refers to the fact that on early 1016’s, meaning the gilt dials and Mark 1 matte dials until the ~1.7-1.8m range, the hour and minute hands are flat. After this, both hands become slightly convex for the rest of the model line.
Mark 5. Serial Range: 66xxxxx-9xxxxxx + early R Serial. The final dial iteration is, ironically, not the last dial used in the 1016 line. As described previously, Mark 3’s are seen both before and after the Mark 4 and 5 dials for reasons that will only be known to those at Rolex Geneva. Please use the drop down menus to navigate to each dial iteration and read more about them. The term "gilt" or "gilt/gloss" refers to dials that were created by a galvanic coating process and appears on the 1016 until ~1967.Welcome to Explorer1016.com, a website dedicated to the iconic Rolex Explorer model 1016.
